New to the just energy transition?

Energy justice is an academic field focused on assessing whether energy systems are fair. For example, it asks how costs and benefits are distributed, who participates in and influences key decisions, whose needs, rights, and histories are recognized, and who has access to affordable, reliable, and clean energy.

A just energy transition applies these principles to transforming energy systems. It goes beyond energy justice: it involves institutions, finance, labor markets, territorial development, industrial policy, and implementation. But without operationalizing energy justice principles, a “just transition” risks becoming a political slogan.
